Secession Costs
* Mayor Richard Riordan says (April 30) that Los Angeles should pay “its fair share” of the cost of the secession study. That just does not make sense. The city has no obligation nor should it have any share in the endeavor to disembowel it. It is as though the United States should have had a “fair share” in the cost of the South’s accumulation of weapons in order to enable it to fight the Civil War and secede from the Union.
The disembowelers want to secede from the city. They have every right to try. But they should pay their own way.
