Barbara E. Shaffner; Longtime Area Resident

Oak View resident Barbara E. Shaffner died Thursday at a skilled nursing center in Ojai after a long illness. She was 93.

Shaffner was born Oct. 27, 1905, to James W. Smith and Rachel A. Frasier in Mullen, Neb. She moved from Minnesota to Ventura County in 1941 and lived in both Ventura and Oak View.

Shaffner enjoyed cooking, which led to a longtime career as cafeteria supervisor at E.P. Foster Elementary School in Ventura.

Her fondest memories were growing up in Nebraska, taking a trip to Hawaii and seeing her youngest son graduate from college.

Shaffner also enjoyed listening to music and writing poetry. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 339 of Ventura.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Shaffner, two sons, George Shaffner Jr. and John D. Shaffner, a brother and three sisters.

Shaffner is survived by a son, James L. Shaffner of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Iris Coleman-Hodges of Camarillo; a sister, Irene Fahye of Ventura; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
