City Offers Grants to Improve Neighborhoods

Share

An informational workshop is scheduled Tuesday to help San Fernando Valley residents, schools and business organizations apply for grants from $250 to $5,000 for neighborhood improvement projects.

The 1999 Neighborhood Matching Fund program is sponsored by the Department of Public Works’ “Operation Clean Sweep,” a citywide program modeled on Councilwoman Laura Chick’s 2-year-old NeighborGood Program.

“I want to encourage people to come to the workshop and find out how easy it really is to partner with the city and to get funds to make their neighborhoods better places to live and work,” Chick said.

Tuesday’s two-hour meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in the conference room of Chick’s district office, 19040 Vanowen St., Reseda. Applications will be available.

Grants are a cash match for an equal contribution of volunteer labor, materials, professional services or cash. Volunteer labor is valued at $10 an hour.

Common projects include landscaping, sidewalk improvements, benches, playground equipment and murals.

To be eligible for the matching fund grant, applicants must attend a workshop to get further information.

For information, call Operation Clean Sweep, (800) 611-CITY, or Chick’s district office, (818) 756-8848.
