Bootleg Liquor Kills 115 People
At least 115 people have died from drinking illegal homemade liquor in Bangladesh in the country’s worst case of alcohol poisoning, the official BSS news agency said. At least 30 people were fighting for their lives at a hospital in the capital, Dhaka, and in the town of Narsinghdi, northeast of Dhaka. Alcohol is banned in Muslim Bangladesh. Police have arrested six people for selling poisonous home-brewed liquor and closed several shops. The government also has ordered an investigation into the incidents. Doctors said many victims did not report to hospitals to avoid problems with police. Some families also want to prevent post-mortem examinations.
