Thousand Oaks resident Robert Nesen, past ambassador to Australia under President Ronald Reagan, will be inducted into the Ventura County Republican Hall of Fame during a dinner Saturday night.

Nesen, who is now retired, became politically active in 1948 after meeting then-Rep. Richard Nixon. He served on several of Nixon’s campaigns for public office, including his successful presidential bid in 1968.

In 1972, Nixon appointed Nesen assistant secretary of the Navy. For his service, Nesen was given the Navy’s highest civilian honor, the Distinguished Public Service Award. He served four years as ambassador to Australia.

He has been chairman and a member of a number of Republican committees and delegations. For more than 30 years, Nesen was also a successful Ventura County businessman who opened his first car dealership in Oxnard in 1948.

He will be inducted in a ceremony at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library near Simi Valley. Former Rep. Robert Lagomarsino will be master of ceremonies and Susan Jeske, a former Ms. America, will sing.

Tickets for the dinner are $75 each and can be obtained by calling Ventura County Republican Party headquarters, 389-9531.
