County Begins Campaign Against Elder Abuse
New billboards publicizing a hotline for elderly and dependent adults who are victims of abuse have gone up around the county, officials announced Thursday.
The billboards, funded by the county, are part of a campaign led by Supervisor Mike Antonovich to raise awareness of the problem and of the county’s 24-hour hotline number, (800) 992-1660, to deal with such cases.

Elder abuse--An article in Friday’s Times contained an incorrect phone number for a 24-hour hotline for elderly people and dependent adults who are victims of abuse. The correct number is (800) 992-1660.
Accompanied by the faces of young and old from diverse backgrounds, the signs read, “Elder abuse hurts . . . everyone. Help is available.”
Five billboards went up on May 1, one in each of the supervisors’ districts. The locations will be changed after a few months, officials said, to maximize exposure. In August, the county will assess the effectiveness of the campaign.
Robert Ryans, director of the County Area Agency on Aging, said his office had noticed that many in the public had never heard of the hotline.
