Tornadoes swept through western Iowa on Sunday, killing two people and injuring at least 14, authorities said.

A tornado that developed in Harrison County near Logan about 4 p.m. Sunday destroyed six homes, damaged several others and demolished a bridge on a rural gravel road, authorities said.

All of the injured are from Harrison County, said Jim Seymour, a hospital administrator. Logan is about 20 miles northeast of Omaha, Neb. Two area highways were also closed due to extensive damage, including downed trees and power lines.

“I saw it tear through some houses and a couple of barns went up and then the tornado maxed out,” said Matt Ver Steeg, a storm spotter for Des Moines station KCCI-TV.

At least 12 west-central and central Iowa counties were under tornado warnings Sunday afternoon and evening as a cell of thunderstorms worked its way across the state.
