Child Support
Re “D.A.’s Office: in the Zone,” editorial, May 11: I think we all agree that we want to improve the collection of money owed for child support in this county. However, taking cheap shots at Wayne Doss is a cowardly approach.
The district attorney’s child support bureau has over 537,000 cases. Some 5,000 new cases are filed each month. To handle those 537,000-plus cases, child support has just 117 deputy district attorneys and a mere 13 investigators. Those 13 investigators are assigned over 8,000 arrest warrants.
Between July 1 and April 30, child support employees collected over $247 million. This is a 25% increase from the previous period. Between Oct. 16 and April 30, they answered over 459,000 telephone calls from the public.
If you want improved collections of child support moneys, I suggest The Times should support hiring more worker bees in child support to do the job rather than making Doss and the other child support employees political scapegoats.
