The Capistrano Unified school board is awaiting word on whether its application for a state grant to help fund a literacy program targeted at low-income families has been approved. Board members hope to receive about $265,000 each year through 2003 to start and run a system of home- and center-based early childhood and literacy services. The grant, through the state Department of Education’s Even Start Family Literacy program, aims to encourage districts to provide a family-centered literacy education program.

District officials expect to find out late this month whether the grant is approved. If it is, the district will learn in June how much it will receive annually, said Beverly DiNicola, principal of community education for the district.
