Federated Department Stores Inc.’s Fingerhut Cos. unit said it bought a 20% stake in 1-800Birthday.com to give customers of the No. 2 U.S. catalog retailer access to gifts such as foods and flowers. Financial terms were not disclosed. Three-year-old 1-800Birthday.com sells gifts through its Internet site and over the telephone. It keeps a birthday database for its 30,000 customers and notifies them of upcoming birthdays.
