LDS Women Offer Day of Service

* About 200 women from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have volunteered to provide a day of service to community schools and Habitat for Humanity today.

Women from relief societies of Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Agoura Hills, Westlake and Oak Park will help with local school projects such as organizing libraries, cleaning computer rooms and painting furniture.

Approximately 60 of the women will assist Habitat for Humanity by helping with framing, painting and landscaping of local housing, said Habitat coordinator Ginny Sargent.

Singer, Pianist to Perform at Tea

* Soprano Helen Boyd and pianist Linda Ottsen will provide music for the Christian Women’s Fellowship spring fling tea in Ventura today at the First Christian Church.

Yizkor Service in Oxnard

* Yizkor service at Oxnard’s Congregation Am HaYam will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Monday Club.

A lecture by Penelope Oppenheimer will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday. She will speak on “Waters of Eden--the rituals and customs of the mikvah.” Oppenheimer is assistant administrator of the mikvah at the University of Judaism.

Non-members are welcome. There is no charge for the lecture series, but reservations are required.

* A Yizkor memorial service for Chabad of Agoura Hills, Chabad of Oak Park and Chabad of Westlake Village will take place at 11:30 a.m. today at all three locations.

Temple Activities for May, June

* A community Yizkor memorial service for the second day of Shavuot will begin at 10 a.m. today at JFC-Temple Ner Ami.

Las Vegas Night will begin at 7 p.m. today. The cost is $30 at the door, and trips to Las Vegas, Reno and Laughlin will be awarded. Music and refreshments will be available.

On June 6, an evening with Jewish humorist John Keats is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the temple. The cost is $5 for members, and $7.50 non-members.

Family Shabbat services on June 11 and 25 will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Rabbi Kenneth Milhander.

Ventura LDS Church Offers Fair

* A fair called “Prepare for Life” will be held at the Ventura Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1 to 4 p.m. today.

Displays and workshops on Y2K, storage, disaster preparedness, career development, financial management and health will be featured.

Bible Study Group Forming

* Trinity Lutheran Church in Simi Valley is forming a small group Bible study class. Anyone interested is welcome. Groups will form based on common needs such as time schedules, child care and level of study.

Colors for Pentecost Sunday

* The Rev. Alan Gorsline of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard has asked those attending the 10 a.m. worship celebration on Pentecost Sunday this Sunday to wear “flame” colors of red, orange and/or yellow. His topic will be “God Has the Matches.”

Spanish language Sunday school is at 1 p.m., and the worship service is at 6 with the Rev. Carlos Saavedra. The Japanese language service begins at 2 p.m. with Haruyoshi Fujimoto.

Temple Plans Service Projects

* The congregation of Temple Beth Torah in Ventura will observe its fourth annual Mitzvah Day on Sunday by tackling a variety of service projects for the community and the temple. A mitzvah is defined as a good deed or virtuous act.

Field gleaning, food sorting at Food Share, graffiti cleanup and Surfers Point restoration are some of the projects the congregation will work on from 9 a.m. through the afternoon.

A blood drive, food drive and used-book drive will will be held at the temple through the day.

Founder of WallBuilders to Speak

* David Barton, founder of WallBuilders, a national pro-family organization, will speak at the

8:45 and 11 a.m. services Sunday at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village.

Barton’s topic will be “Faith, Character and the Constitution.

* All Saints Episcopal Church in Oxnard plans a special Pentecost celebration Sunday with a 10 a.m. bilingual service in Oxnard’s downtown Plaza Park, followed by a march to the church.

Cardinal to Say Special Mass

* Cardinal Roger Mahony will celebrate a special Pentecost Mass at St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church in Newbury Park at 2 p.m. Sunday for new members of the Catholic faith.

The liturgy will be celebrated at the church at 2475 Borchard Road with a reception immediately following, also attended by Mahony.

Regionary Bishop to Be Installed

* The Right Rev. Hein van Beusekom will be installed as regionary bishop of the Province of the United States of the Liberal Catholic Church at Our Lady and All Angels church in Ojai on Sunday.

Van Beusekom, an Ojai resident, is auxiliary bishop of the church. Until last year, he also served as rector of the Ojai church.

The ceremony will be conducted by retiring Regionary Bishop Lawrence Smith of Chicago, with the assistance of World Presiding Bishop Johannes Van Alphen of Johannesburg, South Africa, and other bishops and clergy from throughout the country.

The ceremony, which begins at 10:30 a.m., will be part of the celebration of the Ascension Day Eucharist at Our Lady and All Angels. The public is welcome.

The Liberal Catholic Church is independent of the Roman Catholic Church. It administers the seven sacraments of the Holy Catholic Church and regards freedom of thought as an integral part of spiritual growth and inquiry.

Academy Hosts Talk by Scientist

* The Conejo Jewish Academy in Agoura Hills will host a lecture Thursday by author and scientist Gerald Schroeder on the topic “Evolution: The Religion of the Blind Watchmaker.”

Schroeder has also written a book, “Genesis and the Big Bang,” comparing the scientific event of billions of years ago to the first six days described in Genesis.

School Plans Reception for Parents

* St. Augustine Academy of Ventura will hold a reception May 29 for parents interested in enrolling their children for the upcoming school year. The reception will be held in Santa Paula, with the curriculum being presented during a social hour.

For the past four years, the academy has operated near Transport and Telephone roads in Ventura, but in 2000, it will move to a location near Wells Road and Highway 126. The academy educates children from grades four through 12.

Singles Invited to Concert, Dinner

* The Christian Singles Connection of Camarillo plans a concert and potluck dinner June 5 at the Sonrise Christian Fellowship Church.

“We want to provide a place for singles to connect with Christ together,” said member Jennifer Coler.
