New Laker Gives Penthouse a Shot

Lakers forward Glen Rice, who helped lead the team into the NBA playoffs this week, and his wife, Christy, have leased a Century City penthouse for a year with an option to buy.

They may exercise the option if they like the area and Rice returns to the Lakers next year, said their real estate advisor, Ron Hacker.

The recently acquired NBA all-star, 31, and his wife leased the three-bedroom 2,200-square-foot unit with city views and such common amenities as a pool and tennis court at just under $4,400 a month. The unit was listed at $625,000.

The Rices maintain their permanent residence, a Mediterranean-style house, in Miami. He played for the Miami Heat, where he became the team’s all-time leading scorer, after leading his alma mater, the University of Michigan, to the national championship in 1989.

The 6-foot, 8-inch all-star forward, for years a top NBA shooter, was acquired by the Lakers in March in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, where he had played since 1995. The Rices were represented in their lease-option by Century West Realty and Eroca Kay of Beverly Hills Real Estate.

The Studio City home of the late actor Roddy McDowall has been sold for nearly its $1.3-million asking price. The house went on the market in February. McDowall died in October at age 70. He had lived in the home 26 years.

McDowall, who had many friends in the entertainment industry, loved to entertain them in his home, which has four bedrooms, maid’s quarters and a two-bedroom guest suite. Built in 1952, the 5,000-square-foot house also has a media room with a bar; a hot tub and a pool.

Realtor Michael Gibson, of Gibson & Associates in Studio City, represented himself in buying the home, which had been listed by Kathy Villa of Asher Dann & Associates, a division of Coldwell Banker-Jon Douglas Co., Beverly Hills.

Dale Pollock, whose new edition of his biography “Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas” (Da Capo Press) was released on May 14, has sold his home in Santa Monica Canyon for slightly more than $1 million.

The new edition discusses the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy. The first installment, “Episode I The Phantom Menace,” was released last week.

Pollock, 48, owned the home for 13 years. The house was built in 1922 to resemble Anne Hathaway’s cottage in England. Pollock sold the four-bedroom 2,400-square-foot house, two blocks from the beach, to a fine-arts curator.

Pollock is moving to North Carolina to assume a position as dean of the School of Filmmaking at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He has produced several movies, including “Mrs. Winterbourne” (1996), and he was a film writer at The Times and at Daily Variety.

Anne Brody at Prudential-John Aaroe & Associates, Pacific Palisades, had the listing.

Guitarist Kenny Lee Lewis, a member of the Steve Miller Band (“Fly Like an Eagle,” featured on a national TV commercial this year for the U.S. Post Office), and his wife, singer Diane Steinberg, have listed their four-bedroom 2,400-square-foot-plus home in Woodland Hills at $399,000. They plan to move to a larger house in Valencia.

The Woodland Hills house, built in 1960 on a hill up a private drive, has a recording studio in which a number of multi-platinum and gold records have been written.

“I wrote several songs after moving into the house [18 years ago] that were on the ‘Abracadabra’ album for Steve Miller, which sold more than 5 million worldwide,” Lewis, 45, said.

“The previous owner of the house was Kevin Cronin, lead singer and songwriter for REO Speedwagon. He wrote songs in the house that were on the ‘Hi Infidelity’ album, which broke sales records in 1981 at 11 million copies.

“And the previous owner was John Musso, vice president of Scotti Bros. Records. He had the group Survivor, whose song ‘Eye of the Tiger’ was featured in the movie ‘Rocky III’ and went multiplatinum as well.”

Steinberg, who is a gospel recording artist and church choir director, sang and played the role of Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds in the movie musical “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (1978). She received a Platinum award for the soundtrack album.

Gregg Feinberg, a producer of the movie “Gods and Monsters,” has put his Studio City home on the market at $399,000 and purchased a $649,000 home nearby.

The Studio City home, which has two bedrooms plus a den, is listed with Anita Rich of Coldwell Banker-Jon Douglas Co., Studio City.

A four-story, 26,000-square-foot house in Bel-Air, left half-built when construction stopped on it two years ago in June, has been sold for about $3 million. The house, painted aqua, was being built for the Sultan of Brunei at one time, sources have said.

The buyers are Guy Hackbarth, a local businessman, and his wife, Tania Ferris Hackbarth, who works with Coldwell Banker-Jon Douglas Co. in Beverly Hills. They plan to redesign the house and complete it as an Italian-style villa.

Mary Kay Nibley, an estates director with Fred Sands’ office in Brentwood, had the listing.
