Re “Inflatable Signs Become Debatable,” May 18: Just when did our City Council members become art critics? And just when did it become the role of government to protect us from tackiness? The proposed ban on inflatable advertising is a perfect example of politicians creating a problem where previously none existed.

I happen to be fond of these soft 3-D sculptures. They evoke the pop art of the ‘60s. They celebrate the whimsical side of free enterprise. If city building and safety director Richard Holguin finds the advertising icons all that offensive, I suggest that he take up residence in Pennsylvania’s Amish country.
