Conservation Fund

* Congress is considering full and permanent funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a fund allotting revenue generated through offshore oil drilling directly to the purchase and preservation of wild lands.

As consumption of nonrenewable energy sources grows, protection for our natural resources must gain importance. With polls showing greater than 70% of Americans deeply concerned with the conservation and preservation of our environment, this issue is a no-brainer for our representatives in Washington.

However, there are harmful proposals in this debate that may increase incentives for offshore oil drilling, fund projects that harm the environment and restrict the use of the fund. None of these serves the public interest. Our elected representatives must recognize the importance of this decision and resist pressure to approve proposals that undermine the intent of the fund.
