DETROIT —
Ford Motor Co.’s Volvo division said Monday that it has recalled about 122,660 of its 1998 models after customers complained that the passenger-side air bag suddenly deployed when they were washing their cars.
Volvo said a few customers reported that the air bags were apparently triggered by electrostatic charges caused by the spray cleaner they were using on the dashboard of Volvo 70 series cars.
Owners of 1998 Volvo S70s, V70s and C70s can take their cars to dealers, who will install free a new ground wire. Volvo issued a second recall covering 114,850 of its 1998 Volvo 70 series cars and their predecessor, the 1997 Volvo 850, for a faulty headlight switch.
