An Irvine man was sentenced Thursday in Nashville to 10 years in prison for trying to bring a pistol and silencer onto an airplane.

Gregory C. Krug of Irvine was convicted in U.S. District Court in June of possessing a silencer, attempting to take the gun on an airplane without permission and trying to take the gun across state lines with the intent to commit murder.

Federal prosecutors said Krug had plans to kill up to 15 Tennessee judges, attorneys and his sister. They said Krug was upset over losing control of his Knoxville family’s estate worth millions of dollars.

Krug was stopped by authorities while returning to Los Angeles after visiting central and eastern Tennessee in October 1998. His bags were X-rayed after he told a ticket agent he had had a bomb the previous day. Authorities said a search uncovered the silencer-equipped gun, as well as personal information on judges and attorneys in Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville.

Investigators said they also found hit lists at Krug’s home.
