Peres Urges Probe of Rabin Assassination

Israel’s former Prime Minister Shimon Peres on Friday called for the reopening of the investigation into the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, echoing demands by the family of the late leader.

“I am concerned that there are people [in Rabin’s family] who believe there is still something to examine, so we must investigate,” said Peres, who took over as prime minister after Yigal Amir, an ultranationalist Jew, gunned down Rabin on Nov. 4, 1995.

Amir said he shot the Nobel Peace Prize laureate to prevent him from transferring land to the Palestinians as part of peace agreements.

However, the ease with which Amir approached Rabin continues to trigger speculation that he alone, despite the findings of a special government commission ruling out a conspiracy
