Safeguard Health Chooses Gates for Senior VP, CFO

Dennis Gates, a certified public accountant with 12 years of experience as a financial executive in the health-care services industry, has been named senior vice president and chief financial officer of Safeguard Health Enterprises Inc., an Aliso Viejo-based provider of a variety of health-care, vision and life insurance plans. He previously served as chief financial officer of two other health care companies, TakeCare Inc. and Sheridan Healthcare Inc.

Cedric J. Vanzura joins LifeMasters Supported Selfcare, Newport Beach provider of health-management services, as president and chief operating officer. He was president of Borders On Line and was responsible for initiating the company’s e-commerce site, Borders.com. Before joining Borders, Vanzura consulted for health care companies at Deloitte and Touche.

Bruce Walter Barton has been appointed vice president, corporate communications for DataMan Direct, a Santa Ana direct marketing company. Previously, he was a marketing and public relations consultant and creative director for Northrop Grumman Corp.

James M. Baratta has joined the Irvine law firm of Grant, Hanley, Genovese & Baratta LLP. He was a founding partner in the Los Angeles firm of Daniels, Baratta & Fine LLP.

Robert Harris Jr., Mark Briggs and Thomas Heymann are new members of the board of directors of firstsource.com, a Santa Ana online provider of business and computer products and services. Harris is a senior managing director at Bear Stearns, and head of the investment firm’s San Francisco office. Briggs is president and chief executive of ClientLogic. Heymann is chief executive of GT Interactive Corp.

Scott Robertson has been named a director of Copithorne & Bellows, a public relations agency. He will manage the Irvine office. Robertson succeeds Alejandro Hernandez, who will focus on expansion in Latin America. Before joining the agency, Robertson created and led the technology practice as a group supervisor for Smith Public Relations in Los Angeles and was an account supervisor for Bohle Co.

Karen Newell-Young has been named communications manager for Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa. She previously worked in public affairs at the California State University chancellor’s office and as a freelance writer for the Los Angeles Times. Newell-Young was also director of public information at UC Irvine for five years.

Richard Cimino has been named to the new position of senior vice president, manager of loan servicing for New Century Financial Corp. in Irvine. Cimino joined New Century Mortgage Corporation in 1997 as vice president of loan servicing.

William R. Bahney has been appointed resident vice president of Merrill Lynch’s Newport Beach offices. He will oversee all operations in the MacArthur Court and Fashion Island offices. Bahney had been resident vice president of the West Texas offices.

Ed Pankey has joined the board of directors of PriVest Bank in Costa Mesa. He was chairman of the Bank of Irvine and a developer of apartments and commercial and industrial buildings.

Earl D. Butler has been named senior vice president of John Burnham & Co. Insurance Services and will manage the firm’s Irvine operations. His prior experience includes serving as senior vice president and sales director with Armstrong/Robitaille, senior vice president and head of branch offices for Anderson & Anderson and chief operating officer for Cal-Surance. Butler also held management and executive positions with California Casualty.
