Villanueva and Del Conte Lead Chapman in Rout of Occidental

Stanley Villanueva completed 17 of 20 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns to lead Chapman to a 62-17 victory over host Occidental in a nonconference college football game Saturday.

Eric Del Conte caught seven passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers (5-3).

Phillip Cruz (11 carries, 82 yards) started the scoring for Chapman with a 24-yard touchdown run with 13 minutes 50 seconds left in the first quarter.

Occidental (1-7) answered a minute later when Paul Smith scored on a 69-yard run.

Chapman scored seven straight touchdowns after that.

Cruz scored on a one-yard run to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive that gave the Panthers a 14-7 lead going into the second quarter.

Cruz scored again on a one-yard run to open the second quarter, finishing a 90-yard drive for Chapman. The Panthers got touchdowns from Del Conte, Marvin Qualls and Cruz in the second quarter to take a 41-7 lead at halftime.

Chapman continued to overpower Occidental offensively in the third quarter.

Del Conte scored on an 11-yard pass from Villanueva and Rasheed Phillips scored on a five-yard run to put the Panthers ahead, 55-7, going into the fourth quarter.

Occidental got a touchdown from Steve Bowman on a one-yard run and a 36-yard field goal from Fuzz Rasmussen in the fourth.

Dino Rossi scored Chapman’s final touchdown on an 85-yard kickoff return.

Paul Smith rushed for a game-high 123 yards in 17 carries for Occidental.

Qualls caught six passes for 78 yards to finish behind Del Conte in receiving. Mark Candido, who caught one pass for 52 yards, was Occidental’s top receiver.

Chapman gained 504 yards in total offense. Occidental gained 352 yards in total offense.

The Panthers gained 326 yards passing while the Tigers, who used three quarterbacks, passed for 91. Jesus Zuniga completed one pass in four attempts for 52 yards for Occidental.

Steve Bowman completed three of 10 pass attempts for 19 yards and J.R. Cortez completed a 20-yard pass in one attempt for the Tigers.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s cross-country championships:

Concordia wins--The Eagles won their first conference title with 66 points, followed by Westmont with 78. Azusa Pacific came in third and Cal Baptist was fourth.

Concordia’s Tricia Mattson finished second in 18:18 on the 3.1-mile course at Woodward Park in Fresno. Azusa Pacific’s Chyrstall DeNaayer, who had the same time, edged Mattson at the finish.

Concordia advances to the NAIA Cross-Country National Championships in Kenosha, Wis., on Nov. 20. The national meet will be held at Wisconsin Parkside.

The Eagles, who will make their second trip to nationals, finished 14th last season.

Concordia’s Oliver Mintzlaff won the men’s race, with a time of 25:01 over five miles at Woodward Park. Concordia finished fourth with 98 points. Cal Baptist won with 35 points, Biola was second with 78 and Fresno Pacific placed third with 87 points.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Irvine 0--Megan Sabo had 18 kills for Cal State Fullerton, which won, 15-9, 15-11, 15-5.

Brooke Wit had 12 kills for the Anteaters and Cassie Werhas had nine digs for UC Irvine, which drops to 8-18, 1-13.

Other Titans in double digits in kills was Jamie Ivers (15) and Katie Crawford (14).

Cal State Fullerton improves to 7-20, 3-11.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Fresno Pacific 3, Concordia 0--Concordia came back in Game 3 from a 6-2 deficit to cut the score to 8-7. But it was not enough to keep Fresno Pacific from sweeping in three games.

Becky Stiglich had 12 kills and Lin Gao had eight to lead visiting Fresno Pacific (16-15, 15-3) to a 15-7, 15-5, 15-10 victory. Annie Sand led the host Eagles (17-15, 6-12) with 12 kills.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:

California 9, UC Irvine 3--Two former Orange County high school players scored a combined total of four goals, including a two-pointer, to help Cal to the victory.

Former Foothill High standout Rob Arroyo and Spencer Dornin, formerly of Laguna Beach, each had two goals for the No. 4 Bears (9-9, 3-4).

Jeff Powers of UC Irvine scored twice for the Anteaters, who haven’t won a conference game. UC Irvine, ranked 10th, drops to 7-13, 0-6.
