2. PENN STATE (9-1) lost to Minnesota, 24-23. Rose Bowl traditionalists, rejoice. You’ll have your Big Ten-Pac-10 matchup with Nittany Lions out of race for Sugar Bowl. Next: Michigan, Saturday.
3. VIRGINIA TECH (8-0) beat West Virginia, 22-20. Hokiemon lives. Even with victory, Virginia Tech could suffer in BCS because Mountaineers were 19-point underdogs. Next: Miami, Saturday.
4. TENNESSEE (7-1) beat Notre Dame, 38-14. Since Florida State didn’t play, Penn State lost and Virginia Tech looked shaky, Vols might score big points in polls. Next: at Arkansas, Saturday.
5. FLORIDA (8-1) beat Vanderbilt, 13-6. Gators do themselves no favors in national title chase with dismal effort against the Commodores. Next: at South Carolina, Saturday.
6. KANSAS STATE (9-0) beat Colorado, 20-14. Wildcats sweat out victory over Buffaloes, now head to Lincoln, where they haven’t won since 1968. Next: at Nebraska, Saturday.
7. GEORGIA TECH (6-2) lost to Virginia, 45-38. Yellow Jackets’ chances for a BCS bowl game, Joe Hamilton’s chances for the Heisman disappear in same afternoon. Next: Clemson, Saturday.
8. MISSISSIPPI STATE (8-0) beat Kentucky, 23-22 (Thursday). Bulldogs have won three straight games (by a total of four points) in final two minutes. Next: at Alabama, Saturday.
9. NEBRASKA (8-1) beat Texas A&M;, 37-0. Cornhuskers look awesome on defense against Aggies. Nebraska is 29-1 in last 30 against Kansas State, but the loss came last season. Next: Kansas State, Saturday.
10. WISCONSIN (8-2) beat Purdue, 28-21. How would you like to be the Iowa Hawkeyes next week? Ron Dayne 99 yards away from being the next Great One. Next: Iowa, Saturday.
11. TEXAS (8-2) beat Oklahoma State, 34-21. Hodges Mitchell runs for 149 yards, Major Applewhite passes for 242, Longhorns roll to easy victory. Next: Texas Tech, Saturday.
12. ALABAMA (7-2) beat Louisiana State, 23-17. Now that’s what we call home-field advantage. LSU’s chance for a final play washes away in the (Crimson) Tide. Next: Mississippi State, Saturday.
13. MARSHALL (9-0) beat Kent, 28-16. Thundering Herd has a predictable letdown against a 35-point underdog, but it’s still enough to keep major bowl hopes alive. Next: at Western Michigan, Saturday.
14. GEORGIA (6-2) did not play. Bulldogs trail in series with Auburn, 48-46-8, and haven’t beaten the Tigers in Athens since 1991. Georgia did win a year ago in Auburn, 28-17. Next: Auburn, Saturday.
15. BRIGHAM YOUNG (8-1) beat San Diego State, 30-7. Cougars make it a real holiday in their first trip to San Diego since 1993 as the breeze past the Aztecs. Next: at Wyoming, Saturday.
16, MICHIGAN (7-2) beat Northwestern, 37-3. Wolverines finally enjoy a breather at the Big House. Now for the fun part of the schedule--Penn State and Ohio State. Next: at Penn State, Saturday.
17. PURDUE (6-4) lost to Wisconsin, 28-21. Drew Brees has good numbers (350 yards passing, 85 yards rushing) and bad numbers (two interceptions). Next: at Indiana, Nov. 20.
18. EAST CAROLINA (7-2) lost to Alabama Birmingham, 36-17. Averaging 172 yards a game rushing entering the game, Pirates get nine yards on 32 carries. Next: Cincinnati, Saturday.
19. MICHIGAN STATE (7-2) beat Ohio State, 23-7. Spartans may not win a national title, but they have wins this season over Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State. Next: at Northwestern, Saturday.
20. OHIO STATE (6-4) lost to Michigan State, 23-7. How badly were the Buckeyes outplayed? John Cooper’s bunch didn’t cross midfield in the first half. Next: Illinois, Saturday.
21. TEXAS A&M; (6-3) lost to Nebraska, 37-0. Aggies not long for rankings. This loss comes two weeks after the 51-6 defeat to Oklahoma. Next: at Missouri, Saturday.
22. MIAMI (5-3) beat Pittsburgh, 33-3. Once Hurricanes knocked Pitt quarterback David Priestley out of the game with a shoulder injury, they breezed. Next: at Virginia Tech, Saturday.
23. MISSISSIPPI (7-2) beat Arkansas, 38-16. Deuce McAllister returns the opening kickoff 100 yards and the Rebels never look back. Next: Georgia, Nov. 20.
24. NOTRE DAME (5-4) lost to Tennessee, 38-14. No last-minute comebacks this time as Irish fall too far behind. Major bowl hopes likely gone, but then again, it’s Notre Dame. Next: at Pittsburgh, Saturday.
25. SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (6-3) beat Memphis, 20-5. Quarterback Jeff Kelly and a stifling defense help Golden Eagles clinch at least a share of Conference USA title. Next: Louisiana Lafayette, Saturday.
