TV Ads Touting Hillary Clinton for Senate Will Air Today
A television ad boosting Hillary Rodham Clinton’s expected New York Senate candidacy was unveiled Monday by state Democratic Party officials.
The TV ad, scheduled to begin airing today across upstate New York, comes less than one week after Mrs. Clinton’s likely Republican opponent, New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, began airing his own ads in Upstate television markets.
Judith Hope, the state party chairwoman, said the ad was not a response to the mayor’s television offensive.
But she added, “I would certainly have to acknowledge that he has accelerated my consideration of this initiative.”
Unlike Giuliani’s ads, which are being paid for by his campaign committee, the ad boosting Mrs. Clinton’s candidacy is being financed by the Democratic National Committee and New York’s State Democratic Committee. The bulk of the money is coming from the DNC.
Spokesmen for Giuliani and the state GOP said they would ask the Federal Election Commission to investigate whether the Democrats had coordinated the ad’s message with Mrs. Clinton’s staff, which would be a violation of campaign laws regulating the use of DNC money.
