Clinton Delays, Shortens Visit
President Clinton has delayed and shortened a visit to Greece, officials said, in an extraordinary reaction to growing security concerns and the prospect of violent anti-American demonstrations. A three-day stay in Athens was to lead off an 11-day trip also taking Clinton to Turkey, Italy, Bulgaria and Kosovo. Greece will now be wedged in between Turkey and Italy on Nov. 19 and 20. The White House said Greece had recommended the change. Greek anger toward the U.S. has grown since the U.S.-led airstrikes against Yugoslavia earlier this year. Several recent attacks, including a firebombing of an Athens car dealership Wednesday, have been linked to terrorist groups opposed to Clinton’s visit.
