$70,000 in Jewelry Stolen; 2 Arrested

Thieves got away with $70,000 worth of jewelry from a mall store here Thursday, although two men were apprehended by security guards and arrested in connection with the case, authorities said.

Four men barged into Kevin’s Jewelry store in the Valencia Town Center mall about 4 p.m., grabbing multi-carat diamond rings in platinum settings from the display cases, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Two men were detained by security and later arrested on suspicion of grand theft, but two others escaped with the jewelry, sheriff’s deputies said.

Tarmenio Duque, 39, and Selis Duque, 40, both of Los Angeles, were booked at the Santa Clarita jail in lieu of $20,000 bail, said Lt. Larry Gump of the sheriff’s Santa Clarita station.

The pair told detectives they were not related, Gump said.
