From Staff and Wire Reports

Spark President Johnny Buss named one of his players, guard Penny Toler, the WNBA team’s general manager Thursday.

Buss said Toler would retire as a player to be in charge of team operations and player personnel.

“I wanted her in the organization,” Buss said. “She has 12 years of professional basketball experience.”

Toler said she was contemplating retiring and “moving on to something else” when she applied for the general manager’s job, vacant since Buss fired Rhonda Windham early last summer.

Thursday, Toler said she, Buss and Coach Michael Cooper will make personnel moves together.

“There won’t be any ego on my part,” she said.

“For Coop to be successful, he should have a lot of input into who we draft and other player moves.”
