The bodies of three men killed when their twin-engine plane crashed into Lake Michigan were recovered Friday, still strapped into their seats inside the plane.

The King Air 200 turboprop plunged into the water about 8:30 p.m. Thursday while attempting to take off from Meigs Field, a single-runway airport along the lake and near downtown Chicago.

Killed were R. Roydon Ricks of Granger, Ind., an executive for apparel maker Hartmarx Corp., and pilots Marc Derickson and John Powell, both of Michigan City, Ind. The plane, which was owned by Hartmarx, had taken off from Michigan City and was bound for South Bend, Ind.

David Bowling, an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, said authorities are still investigating the crash but have ruled out weather as a factor.

Fire Department spokesman Will Knight said rescue efforts Thursday were hindered by low visibility and cold, murky water.

Meigs Field sits on Chicago’s lakefront near the Adler Planetarium, Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium.
