Eleven inmates died during clashes between rival gangs in one of the worst outbreaks of violence to hit the Honduran prison system, officials said Saturday.

“We confirm the clashes left 11 dead and 31 injured, two of the injured being in serious condition,” said Police Inspector Nasir Lopez.

Friday night’s violence in the prison in the city of San Pedro Sula was among the bloodiest in the history of the nation’s jails.

Officials said the clash occurred between two rival gangs. The victims were attacked with homemade machetes and knives, crafted of materials from a building being constructed and from bed frames.

“These gangs are mortal enemies. They can’t even look at each other,” Lopez said.

The prison, about 100 miles northwest of the capital, Tegucigalpa, houses 1,901 inmates but was built for only 500.
