Sanctions Imposed Over Bin Laden

The United Nations ignored last-minute pleas from Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban militia and imposed sanctions to demand the arrest of suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden. The U.N. is insisting that Bin Laden be handed over to the United States or a third country to stand trial on charges of masterminding the August 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa, which killed 224 people. The economic sanctions took effect at 9 p.m. Saturday PST. The U.N. Security Council did not consider a postponement that was sought by the Taliban. The militia’s plea came as hundreds of protesters took to the streets, shouting, “Death to America!” and burning U.S. flags, the Taliban-run Radio Shariat said. Protests were held in four provinces but not in Kabul, the capital.
