RON DAYNE

Wisconsin, Running Back

It was a scene out of “Where’s Waldo?” at Camp Randall Stadium after Dayne broke the major-college career rushing record with a 31-yard run in the second quarter against Iowa. Teammates mobbed Dayne on the field. The sell-out, sea-of-red-and-white crowd cheered and stomped so loud the bleachers were shaking. A streaker ran on to the field. Wisconsin mascot Bucky the Badger--dressed in a gold jumpsuit--struck a Heisman Trophy pose. Now that Dayne, with 6,397 yards, has reduced Ricky Williams (6,279) to a bridesmaid on the NCAA career rushing list, Mike Ditka might have his eye on a new runner to give up the Saints’ entire draft for next year--the streaker.

Saturday: 27 carries, 216 yards, 1 TD.

JOE HAMILTON

Georgia Tech, Quarterback

Hamilton is so good that he literally put his hometown of Alvin, S.C., on the map. It seems that Alvin had not appeared on a South Carolina highway map since 1956. Hamilton’s play this season inspired one fan, Sherwood Bridges of North Augusta, S.C., to write a letter to Gov. Jim Hodges to point out the oversight. “Joe has put Alvin on the map but the state of South Carolina has not,” Bridges wrote. “I believe that this omission should be corrected. Please put Alvin on the map!” Shortly after, it was announced that Alvin would be included on the South Carolina highway map for 2000. “That’s wonderful,” Hamilton said. “My roommates and teammates are always teasing me. They’ll ask me, ‘Where’s Alvin at?’ I couldn’t show them because it’s not on the map. Now, I can say, ‘Look at the map.’ I’ll be able to point right at it.”

Saturday: 22 for 30 passing for 322 yards, 5 TDs; 19 carries for 88 yards.

Season: 158 for 233 for 2,438 yards, 24 TDs; 130 carries for 600 yards, 6 TDs.

Next: at Wake Forest, Saturday.
