1. FLORIDA STATE (10-0) beat Maryland, 49-10. Now that’s what a No. 1 team looks like. Seminoles a win away from another trip to national championship game. Next: at Florida, Saturday.

2. VIRGINIA TECH (9-0) beat Miami, 43-10. Hokies should be a lock for No. 2 spot in BCS rankings, right? That is what they thought last week. Next: at Temple, Saturday.

3. TENNESSEE (7-2) lost to Arkansas, 28-24. This is not what defending national champions do. Volunteers let a 10-point second-half lead slip away. Next: at Kentucky, Saturday.

4. FLORIDA (9-1) beat South Carolina, 20-3. Gators have a week to get much, much better. Air Spurrier passes for 161 yards, three less than winless Gamecocks. Next: Florida State, Saturday.

5. KANSAS STATE (9-1) lost to Nebraska, 41-15. Wildcats came into the game allowing 232.3 yards a game, second in the nation. By halftime, Cornhuskers had 253 yards. Next: Missouri, Saturday.

6. PENN STATE (9-2) lost to Michigan, 31-27. In two weeks, Nittany Lions lose shot at Sugar Bowl (and a possible national title) and Rose Bowl. Next: at Michigan State, Saturday.

7. NEBRASKA (9-1) beat Kansas State, 41-15. Suddenly, Husker Nation makes its way back into hunt for No. 1. Nebraska wins despite 10 fumbles. Next: at Colorado, Nov. 26.

8. MISSISSIPPI STATE (8-1) lost to Alabama, 19-7. Living on the edge catches up to Bulldogs. They had won three straight (all in the last two minutes) by a total of four points. Next: at Arkansas, Saturday.

9. WISCONSIN (9-2) beat Iowa, 41-3. Ron Dayne gets another shot at Charles White. The Great Dayne had 246 yards in Rose Bowl last season, a yard short of White’s record. Next: Rose Bowl, Jan. 1.

10. TEXAS (9-2) beat Texas Tech, 58-7. Longhorns advance to Big 12 title game, where their likely opponent is Nebraska. Texas has beaten Nebraska three consecutive times. Next: at Texas A&M;, Nov. 26.

11. ALABAMA (8-2) beat Mississippi State, 19-7. The Tide stands a victory away from a rematch with Florida in SEC title game. Alabama won in the Swamp, 40-39, in overtime. Next: at Auburn, Saturday.

12. MARSHALL (10-0) beat Western Michigan, 31-17. In three seasons at Division I-A, Chad Pennington has passed for 10,784 yards. Next: Ohio, Saturday.

13. GEORGIA TECH (7-2) beat Clemson, 45-42. An incredible day for quarterback Joe Hamilton (410 total yards, five scores) probably clinches Gator Bowl berth for Yellow Jackets. Next: at Wake Forest, Saturday.

14. GEORGIA (6-3) lost to Auburn, 38-21. Bulldogs fall behind, 31-0, at the half and likely get knocked out of New Year’s Day bowl game. Next: at Mississippi, Saturday.

17. MICHIGAN STATE (8-2) beat Northwestern, 34-0. Spartans reach eight wins for the first time since 1987, the season they beat USC in the Rose Bowl game. Next: Penn State, Saturday.

18. MISSISSIPPI (7-2) did not play. Rebels trail in all-time series with Bulldogs, 24-12-1, and have lost the last two. After Georgia, Ole Miss plays at Georgia Tech. Next: Georgia, Saturday.

22. PURDUE (6-4) did not play. A fantastic week for Boilermakers and they didn’t even play. Drew Brees announces he’s coming back for senior season. Next: at Indiana, Saturday.

23. WASHINGTON (6-4) lost to UCLA, 23-20 (OT). Marques Tuiasosopo has an ordinary day and suddenly the Huskies’ Rose Bowl hopes disappear in the Pasadena haze. Next: Washington State, Saturday.

24. EAST CAROLINA (8-2) beat Cincinnati, 48-34. Three touchdown passes by David Garrard and a punt return for a score by Keith Stokes leave the Pirates stoked. Next: North Carolina State, Saturday.

25. OHIO STATE (6-5) lost to Illinois, 46-20. John Cooper making it awfully tough for his supporters. And Buckeyes haven’t even lost to Michigan yet. Next: at Michigan, Saturday.
