CROSS-COUNTRY
UC Irvine’s Courtney Baird and Jon Doroski have been invited to the NCAA cross-country championships Nov. 22 in Bloomington, Ind.
Baird, a freshman, finished 17th and Doroski, a sophomore, 25th in the NCAA West Regional Saturday. The top four runners from teams that do not reach the championships are invited.
The NCAA invited 38 runners for the men’s and women’s races.
Baird helped the Irvine women finish seventh. The men’s team, led by Doroski, finished ninth.
Concordia’s Joan Hansen-Lester was selected the NAIA Region I/II women’s cross-country coach of the year by the U.S. Track Coaches Assn.
Hansen-Lester also was honored as the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s coach of the year for the second time in her four-year career. Her team, ranked fourth nationally, finished the season 27-0, 20-0 in conference.
SOCCER
The Concordia men’s soccer team received a berth in the NAIA national championships after Simon Fraser forfeited the Region I championship it had won Saturday. Simon Fraser defeated Concordia on penalty kicks in the title game.
Simon Fraser learned it had used an ineligible player and reported the violation to the NAIA.
Concordia will be seeded 16th in the 16-team field and will play attop-seeded Mobile (Ala.) Thursday afternoon.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Kristian Kirkpatrick of Mater Dei has signed with San Francisco, according to her father. Kirkpatrick, a 5-11 forward, was second-team All-South Coast League last season.
