1997 Cha^teau La Canorgue, Co^tes du Luberon, Southern France (About $10)

Share

Mmm: dark and plummy, with gorgeous fruit. This tremendously seductive blend of Grenache and Syrah comes from the area around Luberon, home of Peter Mayle (“Toujours Provence,” “Encore Provence”). Syrah, the grape of the great Co^tes-Ro^ties and Hermitages of the northern Rhone, elevates it above other Co^tes du Luberons.

That and the low yields from the old vines (30 years plus) on Cha^teau La Canorgue’s terraced vineyards. Jean-Pierre and Martine Margan, the proprietors of this 17th century estate near Bonnieux, are dedicated to growing their grapes organically (and biodynamically).

Red wine doesn’t get much better at this price level. Buy it by the case to pour as your house wine. Everyone will think you’re brilliant.
