Is Scioscia the Answer for Angels?

Share

With apologies to “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”:

Regis: Today’s contestant is the Angels, and there is only one question. Who are you going to pick for your new manager? A. Don Baylor. B. Davey Lopes. C. Mike Scioscia.

Angels: C. Mike Scioscia.

Regis: Is that your final answer? You don’t want the ex-MVP who played for your team and has managerial experience? Or you don’t want the guy who should have been managing the last three years and could whip your team into shape?

Angels: C is our final answer.

Regis: Even a lifeline couldn’t help you guys.

A singing cowboy couldn’t do it. Hall of Fame players couldn’t do it. Millionaire free agents couldn’t do it. Mickey Mouse couldn’t even do it. Do what? Get me interested in the Angels. What did it take? The hiring of a respected “regular guy” ex-Dodger with two World Series rings to manage the team. Good luck, Mike.

Hiring a new general manager and manager won’t solve the Angels’ problems as long as Tony Tavares rules over them. All Tavares has done is run two pro sports teams (Angels and Ducks) that are among the most disappointing in the country and the laughingstock of fans.

Nothing against Stoneman and Scioscia, but their track records as general manager at Montreal and manager at Albuquerque are less than outstanding. They might have chosen Bob Watson and Chris Chambliss from the Yankees, who have a winning tradition.

Disney missed a chance to bring talent who knows how to win to Anaheim. Under Tavares Rules, the Halos will never be anything more than mediocre.
