Re “Department a Haven for Clinton Loyalists,” Oct. 3:

And your point is? For shame! Of course there are a lot of Democrats in the Education Department. The Republicans down Washington way are for home schools, private schools, parochial schools--anything at all except public schools. For years (ever since Ronald Reagan’s day) they have been trying to gut and get rid of the Education Department.

Democrats are for those other schools, too, but especially for our cherished tradition of education for all, including the poorest in both city and country. That’s the real scandal and tragedy behind Carol Moseley-Braun’s and Carol Rasco’s dilemmas--not that they are lazy do-nothings but that our present Republican Congress is, refusing to fund these eager and able administrators for the work that so sorely needs to be done for the good of all America.
