Balboa Island may soon have its own historical museum, if Pat Buderwitz and a group of residents can raise the $2 million to buy and renovate the old fire station.

With $15,000 in its pocket, the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society is gearing up to begin a full-blown fund-raising campaign to buy the $750,000 fire station.

“We want to make sure that we can preserve it,” Buderwitz said. “There are so many original houses being made into larger homes that Balboa is losing its ambience.”

The group is in the process of becoming a nonprofit corporation, said island resident and attorney Steve Bromberg, who is handling the legal work involved.

“They are a very sincere group of people,” Bromberg said.
