Nature’s Surprise Packages

It’s difficult to tell top from bottom on some bulbs. Generally, the pointed or tapered end is the top, but how about bulbs like anemones (at right) that look more like miniature cow patties with no discernible top or bottom?

When in doubt, you can always plant a bulb on its side and let it figure out which way is up. On an anemone, however, look for little bristly patches, which are the shriveled-up ends of leaf stems. The relatively smooth side of the tuber is where the roots will grow from, so plant smooth-side down.
