From Times Wire Reports

A U.N. employee killed on his first day in Kosovo was mobbed, beaten and then shot in the head after enraging a group of ethnic Albanian teenagers by speaking Serbian or something that sounded like it, international police said. Valentin S. Krumov, 38, of Bulgaria was shot Monday evening after arriving for duty earlier in the day. “It seems like he was speaking Serbian, maybe Bulgarian,” Lt. Col. Dmitri Kapotsev said. Another U.N. police official, Inspector Gilles Moreau, said Krumov was killed after a group of teenagers asked for the time--apparently in Serbian. He responded in Serbian, Moreau said. Both Bulgarian and Serbian are Slavic languages.
