Unable to persuade New Hampshire to change its primary date, Iowa’s Republican and Democratic leaders announced plans Thursday to move their state’s leadoff caucuses to Jan. 24, a week earlier than planned.

The Iowa caucuses had been set for Jan. 31, but New Hampshire unexpectedly scheduled its presidential primary on Feb. 1 and refused to push it back to Feb. 8.

Iowa reached the conclusion that it had no choice but to move the caucus date to Jan. 24 to preserve its leadoff status, said state Republican Chairman Kayne Robinson.
