Choosing a Pest Control Company

Share

About 2,300 companies are registered and 22,000 individuals are licensed to perform pest control in California, according to the Structural Pest Control Board in Sacramento.

The board, which keeps records of consumer complaints against pest-control companies, receives about 1,200 complaints a year, most related to “undercalling” (missing an infestation).

In 1997 and 1998, 46 licenses were revoked, mainly for undercalling and pesticide misapplication.

To avoid problems, consider these tips when scouting out a potential exterminator:

* Seek referrals from friends and neighbors, and ask companies for references.

* Get at least three written price quotes. The least expensive option is not necessarily the best deal. Make sure you know what techniques will be used, and what type of warranty or guarantee is offered.

* Verify that the company and pest-control operator are registered and licensed by calling the Structural Pest Control Board, (916) 263-2540.

You can also find out if any complaints have been filed against a particular company, although the board only maintains these records for two years.

* If you’re interested in alternative methods, be skeptical of any outrageous claims.

* Don’t be pressured into thinking you have to make a decision right away. Wood damage is slow enough that an additional month of searching will not make a significant difference.

* Don’t get an estimate over the phone. The company needs to inspect your house and should provide a detailed written report that describes the extent of any damage.

* Ask if the company belongs to the Pest Control Operators of California or the National Pest Control Assn. Membership in these trade organizations indicates that the company has access to the latest information and is committed to further education.
