Christie Remembered

“Shadowing Dame Agatha” by Betty Lowry (Sept. 19) brought back vivid World War II memories in England. Our Coast Guard Flotilla Ten-24 Landing Craft, Infantry (LCI-L), was based at Greenway House, a charming cottage right on the River Dart. Agatha Christie had generously lent it to the U.S. Navy for the duration. Our LCIs were moored in midstream nearby. After the Sicily and Salerno invasions, we were enjoying some time off before getting ready for the “big one” on D-Day.
Many of our crew spent pleasant days and evenings in nearby Torquay. The Imperial Hotel became our place of choice. The prettiest girls attended its weekend tea dances.
