Shortstop Brewster Commits to USC

Shortstop Jonathon Brewster of Notre Dame High announced Monday he has committed to USC.

Brewster, one of the best athletes at the Sherman Oaks school, chose the Trojans over UCLA.

“I thought it was a real good school and fit me the best,” Brewster said.

Brewster, who also plays quarterback for the football team, batted .321 last season for the Mission League co-champion Knights.

* Pitcher Tony Sulser of Calabasas has committed to Arizona. Sulser, who also visited Florida and Wake Forest, was 9-2 for the Frontier League champions last season.

* Dan Cowgill, a former assistant coach at Cal State Northridge, has been hired as the baseball coach at La Canada High.

Cowgill, a Pepperdine graduate, coached at El Camino College from 1977-81, at Consumnes River College in Sacramento from 1982-87 and at L.A. City College from 1988-96 before assisting at Northridge during the 1997 and ’99 seasons.

TENNIS

* Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas and Derrick Bauer of Manhattan Beach won the boys’ 18 doubles championship Saturday in Sacramento in the first of three International Tennis Federation world junior ranking tournaments.

Amritraj and Bauer defeated Ytai Abougzir of Boca Raton, Fla., and Philippe Salvat of Canada, 6-1, 7-5, in the final. The pair beat Sam Warburg of Sacramento, the No. 1 player in the nation in boys’ 16 singles, and No. 3-ranked Ryan Heinberg of Agoura Hills, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals.

BASKETBALL

* A men’s game and a women’s game involving Pepperdine are among nine West Coast Conference contests to be televised this season on Fox Sports Net.

The first is a Waves women’s home game against Portland on Feb. 6. The second is a men’s game Feb. 19 at Loyola Marymount.

The WCC women’s tournament final March 5 will be televised on Fox Sports and the men’s final March 6 will be shown on ESPN.

* Cal State Northridge is holding a tipoff basketball dinner Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the campus Grand Salon. Former UCLA Coach John Wooden will be the featured speaker. Cost is $100. Information: (818) 677-3994.
