The Los Angeles City Council took a big step Wednesday toward increasing the number of psychologists in the San Fernando Valley who can help police officers struggling with job and personal stresses.

The council approved a new lease for a larger office for the LAPD Behavioral Sciences Services Section on Ventura Boulevard in Encino. It will provide room for three psychologists to serve the Valley instead of the one now working from a smaller office elsewhere on the boulevard.

Police Chief Bernard Parks announced last year that he wanted more psychologists as part of an effort to better address stress issues for police officers.

“Having these people in the Valley provides a better service to the employees out there,” said Kevin Jablonski, acting head of the section.

Jablonski said job offers have been made to additional psychologists, who have to go through background checks before they can be deployed to the Valley.
