Funeral services for Maria Encarnacion Cardenas, mother of Assemblyman Tony Cardenas (D-Sylmar), will be held Monday and Tuesday at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Pacoima.
Encarnacion Cardenas, 71, died of an aneurysm Tuesday while visiting relatives in her Mexican hometown of Temastian, Jalisco.
She is survived by 10 children, 33 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Besides the assemblyman, the children are Catalina Gomez and Elisa Herrera, both of Arleta; Elvira Loa of Palmdale; Richard Cardenas of Santa Clarita; Maria Rodriguez of Chicago; Maria Sanchez of San Fernando; Jose Cardenas and Ernesto Cardenas of Sylmar; and Maria del Rosario Reyes of Colombia.
The rosary and viewing will be at 7:45 p.m. Monday, and the funeral Mass at noon on Tuesday. The burial, which will follow the Mass, will be at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made to the Andres Cardenas Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization named after her deceased 16-year-old son that provides scholarships. The address is P.O. Box 341230, Arleta 91334.
