Mr. President, Are You Totally Crazy?

You never know what name is going to pop up in the data bank of a political party. Not that the computer would notice. Dr. Bernard Lewinsky, Monica’s father, recently received a fund-raising request from the Clinton Legal Expense Trust. That’s the organization trying to pay off the legal expenses of the president and first lady. Dr. Lewinsky wrote his reply on the envelope (see accompanying).

SURE, MISTAKES HAPPEN . . . : But Dr. Lewinsky said this is the second request for funds he has received from the Clinton Legal Expense Trust. Lewinsky noted that he’s not exactly a major donor. He pointed out that “over the years I’ve given a total of $400, I think, to the Democratic Party.”

THE NAME’S FAMILIAR . . . : Dr. Lewinsky’s reaction was different from that of Paula Jones when she received a 1998 fund-raising appeal from the Democratic Party. Jones sent a donation.

“I am a Democrat,” she explained at the time.

Then again, that Paula Jones was a West Hollywood businesswoman, not the ex-Long Beach resident who had sued the president.

ANGELENOS ON THE ROAD: While in Seattle, Ralph Merrill of Long Beach saw a street-closed sign that apparently excepted drivers of “sound mind and body.” (That would seem to leave out some Clinton fund-raisers.) Actually, Merrill said, “Sound Mind & Body” is the name of a nearby fitness center.

L.A.--IT’S EVERYWHERE! L.A.’s urban sprawl also applies to some of this city’s “local” talk-show hosts. When Minyard & Minyard made their debut on KRLA (AM/1110) last year, Ken was in L.A. while his son Rick began broadcasting from Modesto.

Bean of the team of “ Kevin and the...” on KROQ (FM/106.7) just moved to an island off the coast of Washington, where, he says, “I do my half of the show from my guest house.”

And then there was the incident of a few months ago reported on Don Barrett’s laradio.com Web site involving KRLA yakmeister Ira Fistell.

One night, through a computer glitch, all callers to Fistell’s show were routed to an Oregon talk radio network. No one reached him that night because, oddly enough, L.A. radio host Fistell actually works in L.A.

DID ANCIENT KILLER BEES INHABIT L.A.? In the new book “Ancient L.A.,” Michael Jacob Rochlin writes that the Native American inhabitants of what is now Whittier called the region Sukagna, meaning “place of wild bees.”

Hard to believe Whittier was ever wild.

miscelLAny:

You may recall the case of the woman who was bitten by a rabbit at a Santa Monica animal shelter and took legal action to recover the cost of her treatment as well as the cost ($70) of an acting class she missed. Earl Marshall of Covina comments that’s what legal experts must mean when they refer to “a class-acting suit.”
