Filmmaker Oliver Stone pleaded guilty to drug possession and no contest to driving under the influence and was ordered into a rehabilitation program, prosecutors said.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker appeared in court Friday, after his scheduled appearance on Sept. 13 was advanced, and entered pleas to the misdemeanors.

Stone’s public relations representative did not immediately return a phone call Tuesday seeking comment.

Municipal Judge Judith O. Stein placed him on three years’ probation and ordered him to attend a drug rehabilitation program, according to a statement Monday from the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

During his probation, Stone can only drive to and from work and to the drug rehabilitation program.

His attorney tried to enter the same pleas for Stone on Aug. 20, but the judge rejected them and said the filmmaker had to appear in person. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors agreed to drop two felony counts of possessing controlled substances.

Stone, 52, was arrested June 9 after driving erratically on Benedict Canyon Drive. A search of his 1987 black Ford Mustang turned up a small amount of hashish and other controlled drugs.

Prosecutors said Stone’s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit for driving of 0.08% when he was arrested.

If Stone successfully completes the drug treatment program, the charge of possession of concentrated cannabis will be taken off his record, Deputy Dist. Atty. Ann Rundle said. The DUI conviction will remain.

Stone also was fined $390, plus penalties that would nearly triple the fine, and was told to pay $100 to the state Victims Restitution Fund, prosecutors said.

Stone’s films include “JFK” and “Natural Born Killers.” He won directing Oscars in 1989 for “Born on the Fourth of July” and 1986 for “Platoon,” which also won the Academy Award for best picture.
