* Erma J. Hoover; Retired Schoolteacher Retired teacher Erma J. Hoover died at her home in Ventura. She was 80.

Hoover was born Erma Mayfield on Sept. 20, 1918, in Girard, Texas. After attending school there, she went on to graduate from Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas.

She then lived in New Mexico and married in 1944, but later divorced.

Hoover moved to California and attended the University of La Verne. She taught at San Antonio and Mission elementary schools in Ontario.

She had been a resident of Ontario for the last 46 years, until recently, when she moved to Ventura.

Her son, James Hoover of Ventura, said she loved to travel and sew.

Hoover was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Paula Saunders.

In addition to her son, she is survived by a sister, Stein Ferry of Woodlake; a brother, Jimmie Dale Mayfield of Arizona; and five grandchildren.

Graveside services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Charles Carroll Funeral Home in Ventura.
