FOCUS: ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY NEWS : CYPRESS
The Kennedy High School band has learned that it will definitely be going to Sydney, Australia, to perform during the opening ceremonies for the 2000 Olympics. But the band needs funds in order to assure Olympics officials it will be able to make the trip. The band has a deadline of early October.
Each band member already is responsible for his or her own air fare and food. Cypress Arts Commissioner Alexandria Coronado, who has been following the band’s status on its trip to the Olympics, urged the commission at Thursday night’s meeting to help the band.
Since the commission is not allowed to raise funds for anyone, it decided to spread the word that donations are desperately needed.
The Olympics committee had rescinded its invitation to Kennedy High to be part of a large international band but agreed to reinstate the school after being served with a lawsuit from band organizers. The suit was dropped.
To donate, contact Bob Anthony, Kennedy High School band instructor, at (714) 220-4142.
