A 400-room conference hotel planned for the Irvine Spectrum was given the green light last week by planning commissioners, who disregarded warnings by city planners that the driveway proposed on Irvine Center Drive would be dangerous.

“It seems we’re going to an extreme for a margin of safety that may or may not be needed,” Commissioner Ed Dornan said. “Let’s wait and see if it’s a problem and then we’ll take care of it.”

In addition to guest rooms, the hotel will offer about 40,000 square feet of conference and banquet space, a fitness center, pool and restaurant and lounge. The on-site parking garage will hold 400 cars, with another 64 valet parking spaces.

City planners said they were concerned that cars entering or leaving the hotel from the driveway proposed on Irvine Center Drive, a high-speed thoroughfare, would be prone to traffic accidents.
