Wicca Is Based on Nature, Not Satan

Share

Re the Off-Kilter column “Whither the Warlock in Hollywood?” (Aug. 30), let us start with a basic. No one complains there are too many Christians on TV. I have yet to see a column on the lack of female ministers or the overabundance of nuns on the screen, big or small. While Hollywood portrays witches as beings of supernatural abilities, the truth is it is the preferred term for describing people (male and female) who engage in the practice of Wicca.

Wicca is a nature-based religion that is older than Judaism, Christianity, Islam and all the other monotheistic religions. We have no belief in Satan. He is a Christian invention. To those of us within the Wiccan community the term “warlock” is an insult. It means “oath breaker” or “liar.” Using the term to identify male witches is a Hollywood invention. The rising cost of caldrons aside, your article showed a bigotry and a lack of knowledge of a large religious population.
