Advanced Placement textbooks, uniforms for sports teams, musical instrument rentals and even the use of lockers all carry a price tag in the Irvine Unified School District.

But that may change now that one angry parent has complained to the state’s Department of Education.

The California Constitution prohibits a charge for required school materials, state officials advised Ginny Read in a letter.

District officials said they still have to find out whether their existing fees comply with the law before acting on Read’s solo investigation of the issue.

“This serves to underscore one more time that we are simply not funded by the state at a level to provide everything that parents want for their children,” said Superintendent Pat Clark White.
