Atty. Gen. Janet Reno has offered former Sen. John C. Danforth (R-Mo.) the job of heading an independent inquiry into the government’s use of force at the fiery end of the Branch Davidian standoff near Waco, Texas, government sources said Tuesday.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Justice Department was in final negotiations over the details of the independent inquiry and an announcement could come as early as today.

Congressional officials said they understood Danforth is willing to take the job but that the agency was considering appointing a second person--possibly a Democrat--to share the leadership duties.

Before Danforth, 63, entered the Senate, he served as attorney general in Missouri for eight years.
